Marble stone gap filling adhesive
Adhesives Used for Filling in the Gaps of Marble: The Guide
Regarding flooring, countertops, and walls, one of the highest quality natural stones available is marble. The most common causes of small cracks or joints in the surface of the marble during installation are the marble’s thermal expansion and contraction in response to changes in temperature, structural movement (from supporting structures), and several other external influences.
The key element to creating an aesthetically pleasing and durable surface for your marble is to select the proper glue for filling in gaps between stones of marble.
This guide is designed to teach you how to effectively use gap-filling adhesives on marble stone surfaces. Throughout this guide, we will identify the various types of gap-filler adhesives and how to properly use them.
We will ensure no question remains unanswered after you have completed this guide and using gap-filling adhesives to fill in the gaps between the stones of your marble.
What Are Gap-Filling Adhesives?
Gap-filling adhesives can fill voids (i.e., spaces) located at the joints between two pieces of marble or between the stones in a marble installation. Gap-filling adhesives not only restore the aesthetic integrity of the joint between two pieces of marble, but they also add a degree of structural strength to the bond between the two pieces of marble.Although many types of adhesives are designed for general-purpose purposes, adhesives specifically designed for filling gaps in marble stone surfaces have unique properties that make them more user friendly and effective:
• When creating adhesive formulations that work well with marble stone, the formulation is specifically designed for adhering to natural material.
• Gap-filling adhesives used with marble stone allow for high levels of moisture and other temperature fluctuations to be tolerated by the adhesive without compromising its strength as well as being able to provide a smooth continuous finish when applied over previously installed gap filler materials (the most common use of gap-filling adhesive on marbles).
Types of adhesives typically used to fill gaps in marble stones include:
1. Epoxy Adhesive
Epoxy is one of the most commonly used methods to fill gaps in marble.
Advantages:
– Provides a highly durable bond between the two surfaces being glued together
– Resistant to water, beverages, oils and a variety of substrates that might otherwise damage a porous material, and performs well under both hot and cold temperature extremes.
– Can be colour matched to any shade of marble being installed.
Best applications – Filling deep gaps or repairing marbles that have experienced structural damage, kitchen countertops and frequently used surfaces.
2. Polyester Resin Adhesive
Polyester resin is the next most common adhesive used with natural stone behind epoxy.Advantages:
Quick drying time
Easily sanded/polished
Affordable
Disadvantages:
Less durable than epoxy
Will yellow over time
Application: Use for small gaps and for cosmetic touch-ups only.
Acrylic based fillers
Benefits of using an acrylic filler:
-Easy to use
-Great when used on surfaces that have small gaps
-NO odors creating a sanitary repair
Application for acrylic-based fillers.
-Creating your own repairs with an acrylic-based adhesive
-Repairing small cracks/ joints.
Choosing the right acrylic-based repair adhesive to be used:
Length and Width of the Crack
– Use an acrylic or low viscosity epoxy for small/hairline cracks.
– Use a polyester or knife grade epoxy for medium or larger gaps
– Use a high-strength epoxy for large/deep gaps.
The location of the gaps
– There are different adhesives used for the many different applications of marble. As a general guideline use acrylic or polyester based adhesive for dry surfaces, use an epoxy when using in wet areas, (bathroom/facility), and when using outdoors, use an epoxy type that is UV resistant.Finish Type of the Required Adhesive:
You should always try to find a label on the adhesive for marble that describes it as “Polishable” or “Stone Grade” when you want to polish the areas that have been repaired.
Instructions on how to use the Adhesive:
1. Preparing the Surface.
• Clean the entire area surrounding the gap (dirt, grease, oil and other debris).
• De-grease the area with either Acetone or Alcohol.
• Verify that there is no water or moisture in the area.
2. Mixing the Adhesive
• Mix the adhesive according to the directions provided by the Manufacturer.
• Only mix enough of the adhesive to complete the work before starting the repair. 3. Filling the Gap
• Use the spatula or putty knife to apply the filling.
• Fill all the gaps so that they are filled solidly and slightly overfilled (to allow for sanding).
4. Cure Time
• After filling the gap, you must allow sufficient cure time (30 minutes to 24 hours) based on the specific product you purchased.
• During this cure time, you must not touch or apply stress to the area being repaired.
5. Finishing
• Sand the area down so that it is flush with the adjacent surfaces.
• Polish the area to match the adjacent marble finish.
Additional Tips:
• Colour Matching: You can use stone pigments in order to achieve a colour and vein match to the marble.
• Work in layers: If filling a gap which is very deep, start filling in layers rather than all at once to reduce the possibility of shrinkage.
• Temperature: Use a moderate air temperature whenever possible (optimal is 15 C° to 30 C°).
• Masking Tape: Use masking tape to protect adjacent surfaces during the repair and to provide a clean edge.
• Polish Correctly: Polish in a progressive manner using gradually finer grades of sandpaper until there is a smooth seamless finish.
Common Mistakes:
• Failing to clean the area prior to starting the repair.
• Overfilling and failing to sand level.
• Not waiting long enough for the adhesive to cure.
• Using an adhesive not designed for use in wet areas.
Using the appropriate adhesive will help ensure the longevity and visual appeal of your repair. Even though high performance will primarily rely on the use of epoxies (due to their strength and durability), fillers can also be used successfully for small cosmetic repairs using polyesters or acrylics respectively.
Correct surface preparation, application, and finishing methods will ensure all marble repairs and restoration are completed to the highest standard in order to restore the appearance and functionality of the surface.
