Granite epoxy for stone fabrication

Granite epoxy is an important industrial substance in the industry of stone shaping as it is especially made to glue, mend, fill and finish granite slabs. Unlike the typical glues found in stores, granite epoxy is specifically made for stone and has no shrinkage once dried, has a good bond to the substrate, and is very weather resistant. This makes it an ideal option to use for any high-quality granite processing and installation.

Granite epoxy performs three key functions in the stone workshop and on-site. First, it fills in small cracks, holes and seams in granite surfaces which salvages slabs that would have been discarded as defects and reduces material waste. Second, granite epoxy forms an extra-strong bond between granite slabs allowing for stabilized joints in counters, walls and floors. Third, it strengthens the weak edges and thin portions of granite to protect against chipping, cracking and loosening of the structure as they are cut, polished and as they age.

Granite epoxy has several advantages over polyester based glues and traditional glues used for stonework. It cures without shrinking, leaving behind a seam that can not be seen and that can withstand the grinding and polishing of joints. Premium grade formulations of granite epoxy provide superb UV stability, moisture resistance and resistance to normal household chemicals, acids and alkaline; thus preventing yellowing, peeling or discolouration of granite surfaces used indoors or outdoors. Customizable colour tintable resins enable the granite epoxy to be matched closely to the colour of natural granite; thus providing a seamless high gloss finish when repaired & joining to the original granite.

Stone fabricators should evaluate which granite epoxy meets the needs of a given project. High-viscosity (knife-grade) epoxy is suitable for filling vertical seams and crack repairs due to its ability to not sag or run. Low-viscosity penetrating granite epoxy is effective with fine hairline cracks, by fully penetrating the stone pores providing a solid bonding base. Heat – resistant and scratch-proof granite epoxy formulations are required for granite used in heavy traffic areas where granite countertops are used. Types of granite used for outdoor memorials and cladding require UV stabilised non-yellowing granite epoxy to provide long-lasting stability – both structurally and aesthetically.

Standard application of granite epoxy will result in durable and faultless performance. First, clean and dry the granite surface thoroughly; disallowing dust, oil and any loose particles of stone from remaining on the surface, assuring a strong bond. Second, mix the epoxy components together according the manufacturers’ mixing ratio, in small amounts in order to eliminate premature setting/hardening. Third, apply the mixed epoxy over the crack, seam or bonding area by applying the epoxy evenly, ensuring that all voids are full of epoxy without any air pockets trapped in the voids. Fourth, allow the epoxy to finish curing according to the manufacturer’s specifications for 12 to 24 hours. Finally, grind and polish the cured area to void joint level with the original surface of the granite creating a smooth consistent finish.

Granite epoxy is applicable for residential and commercial stone fabricating where granite is utilized for kitchen and bath tops; wall surfaces (inside); outside stone floor surfaces; monuments; custom stone furnishings, and architectural stone inlays. With its proven ability to improve the quality of a fabricated product, extend the life of stone, and achieving a seamless finish, it is an essential material for the professional stone fabricator.
