Granite Bonding Epoxy: A Professional Installer’s Handbook
Granite bonding epoxies will be used by professional stone installers because they provide the highest strength, longest lasting bond with granite when installed or repaired. Professional-grade granite epoxy is much better than standard construction adhesives or generic caulk in that it has significantly higher general tensile strength, better resistance to moisture, and better heat stability; therefore, professional-grade stone adhesives are ideal for heavy granite slabs, seams in granite countertops, granite wall cladding, and structural bonding of stone.
The choice of granite epoxy by installers has a direct impact on their projects in terms of durability and visual quality. Preferred by professional installers due to their consistent mixing ratios (1:1), premium dual cartridge epoxies offer a viscosity that fills fine gaps, has an aggressive bond to both polished and unpolished granite surfaces, and will not shrink after complete curing. After curing, epoxy adhesives can endure daily chemical exposure, all forms of moisture, and fluctuations in temperature; thus preventing failure of joints, cracks, or discoloration of stone installations into residential and commercial areas.
To achieve maximum performance from their granite bonding epoxy, installers must accurately apply adhesives. To prepare surfaces for bonding, installer must clean any surfaces of granite or substrates, dry all surfaces of granite or substrates, and lightly sand (abrade) all surfaces of granite or substrates to remove all dust, grease, and foreign debris to create maximum surface area for adhesive contact. Thoroughly mix resin component and hardener component for a minimum of two (2) minutes (120 seconds) to eliminate potential for uneven curing. Use a uniform, thin layer of mixed granite epoxy adhesive on both bonded surfaces (granite and granite), align slabs in correct position, use uniform, even clamping pressure to maintain the bond. Allow adhesive to cure undisturbed (at room temperature) for approximately 30 to 40 minutes before the adhesive is no longer tacky, and maintain for 12 to 24 hours for the adhesive to achieve 100% structural bond.
