Waterproof adhesive for stone

I. Core Definitions and Classifications

1. Essential Analysis

Stone waterproof adhesive is a composite adhesive that combines high-strength bonding performance and long-lasting waterproof properties. It achieves waterproofing by sealing the pores of stone materials and forming a closed adhesive layer, while ensuring the stable bonding between stone and substrates (such as concrete, wood, etc.). It is widely used in scenarios like building curtain walls, floor paving, and landscape engineering. Its standard English terms can be expressed as “Waterproof Adhesive for Stone” or “Stone Waterproof Backplane Adhesive”.

2. Mainstream Types and Characteristics

Type Core Component Outstanding Advantage Applicable Scenario
Inorganic-Organic Composite Adhesive Inorganic silicate + high molecular polymer Anti-sagging, no whitening, compatible with substrates with slight vibration Bonding of vitrified tiles and marble walls, renovation of old ceramic tiles
Modified Silane (MS) Adhesive Silane-terminated polymer UV resistance, excellent elasticity, adaptable to thermal expansion and contraction Sealing of outdoor stone curtain walls and sculptures, cold/high-temperature environments
High-Grab Adhesive Solvent-free polymer Workable underwater, strong initial adhesion Stone paving in swimming pools, repair in humid environments
Transparent High-Adhesion Adhesive High-viscosity resin Invisible and traceless, strong gap-filling ability Precision stone splicing, glass-stone composite components

II. Key Technical Indicators and Standards

1. Core Performance Parameters

  • Bonding Strength: The tensile bonding strength is usually ≥ 1.0MPa, and the retention coefficient after water immersion should be > 0.8 (referring to the standard T/CSBZ 007—2017);
  • Waterproof Performance: The impermeability pressure is ≥ 0.3MPa, and there is no swelling or degumming after long-term water immersion;
  • Weather Resistance: It can withstand a temperature difference of -40℃~130℃, and no cracking occurs after 5000 hours of UV irradiation;
  • Environmental Protection: The VOC content is < 50g/L, non-toxic and odorless (basic requirements for green building materials).

2. Core Domestic and International Standards

  • China: T/CSBZ 007—2017 Stone Waterproof Back Adhesive, which specifies the physical and mechanical properties and test methods;
  • International: Emphasis is placed on “underwater bonding performance” and “weathering cycle test”. For example, the EU CE certification requires passing 200 freeze-thaw cycle tests.

III. Construction and Usage Guidelines

1. Key Steps for Substrate Preparation

  • The surface of the substrate should be solid and flat, and contaminants such as oil and release agent should be removed. For porous stone, it is recommended to remove dust in advance;
  • For damp substrates, priority should be given to selecting “wet-surface applicable” adhesives (e.g., Evo-Stik Strong Stuff). For underwater construction, it is necessary to ensure no running water on the surface;
  • The back of heavy materials such as marble and granite should be roughened by more than 70% to increase the bonding area.

2. Standardized Construction Process

Note: The area for a single adhesive application should be ≤ 1㎡, and the adhesive mortar should be used up within 4 hours; for vertical surface bonding, Hi-Grab type adhesive is preferred to reduce temporary support.

3. Solutions to Common Problems

Problem Cause Countermeasure
Bonding Failure Oil stains on the substrate not cleaned Wipe with white alcohol and reapply the adhesive
Adhesive Layer Cracking Thermal expansion and contraction not considered Replace with MS modified silane adhesive and reserve expansion joints
Stone Whitening Adhesive contains free calcium Select “algae and mildew resistant” inorganic composite adhesive
