Granite glue for broken stone edges
TWO PART EPOXY ADHESIVE – THE PREFERRED ADHESIVE FOR STRUCTURAL REPAIRS
Two part epoxies are considered the standard against which ALL STRUCTURAL REPAIR of granite surfaces are measured. The cured product – tensile strength – ranges from 3,500 to 5,000 PSI! Also, two part epoxies are very rigid load-bearing adhesives where corners have broken, edges have been fractured, or stones have been split. Premium-grade/Two-Part epoxy adhesives cure clear (invisible), therefore they will blend with granite perfectly. Finally, when used as an adhesive for repairing granite surfaces outside and/or inside, two-part epoxy adhesives will not be affected by any water, chemical, or temperature changes! Additionally, if using a heavy-bodied adhesive (“knife grade”) to repair an edge on a vertical surface, use the heavy-bodied adhesive so that it does not sag when applied.
3. One Part Polyurethane Glues (General/Temporary/Non-Structural Repairs)
One part polyurethane glues are about the same strength as two-part epoxies, but they are not as rigid as two part epoxies due to their flexibility; Therefore, One part polyurethane glues should only be used for general or temporary repair to granite surfaces and not for structural use or interior/exterior locations.Fast-setting cyanoacrylate glue (stone grade glue) can be used for repairing small edge chips, as well as very tiny hairline fractures. Due to the speed of the cure time (10-30 seconds), you can quickly and accurately touch up your granite using this adhesive since it dries to a clear or transparent condition, with only a modest amount of damage occurring to the surface of the granite. However, because the bond strength of cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) is not strong enough or durable enough for long-term support, it should not be used on large structural failures of granite.
Polyurethane adhesives are intended for exterior applications or for use on rough edges. Moisture-cured polyurethane adhesive has the ability to remain flexible and durable enough to create a bond between granite and wood outdoors or on rough breakages in granite. Polyurethane adhesive is both water resistant and made from chemically stable advanced technologies, providing a level of protection from UV-induced yellowing. Properly applied polyurethane adhesive will be able to accommodate minor thermal movement (contraction or expansion), thus minimizing the risk of future cracking in the granite.
What is best to use it for? Should I use epoxy or polyurethanes to repair my granite?Professional-grade stone granite repair adhesives must meet the following requirements for an invisible and strong repair.
– Resistance to Yellowing: UV Stabilized Adhesives Will Maintain Their Color Consistency And Allow For Repairs That Are Nearly Invisible.
– High Bond Strength: Industrial-Grade Adhesives Will Bond The Loose Edge With Impact And Compression Forces And Daily Wear.
– No Shrinkage/Clear Cure: Adhesives Will Fill The Edge Gap Completely And Will Not Sink As They Set.
– Water- And Mildew-Proofness: Adhesives That Are Waterproof Will Help Prevent Water From Penetrating The Marble, Which Will Lead To Structural Problems With The Marble Because Of Moisture Damage. Whether Outdoor Moisture Or Indoor Moisture, Moisture That Gets Into The Adhesive Will Require Mould To Form.
Room Temperature Guidelines For Completing The Granite Edge Repair Process With Stone Granite Repair Adhesive
1. Remove All Rocks And Debris: Prior To Applying The Adhesive To Maximize The Bonding Strength, Make Sure All Loose Debris, And Dirt, Were Removed, As Well As Making Sure That ALL Bonded Surfaces Are Completely Dry
2. Prepare The Epoxy Adhesive (If Using Epoxy, If Not Skip This Step): Combine The The Hardener And The Epoxy Resin In Ratio As Required By The Manufacturer (Typical 2 To 1), And Mix Until You Have Achieved A Completely Mixed Epoxy
3. Apply Adhesive: Apply Equal Amounts Of Adhesive To Both Broken Edges To Be Bonded, However Do Not Use The Knife Grade Epoxy On The Vertical Broken Edge. If The Knife Edge Is Not Secured To The Supporting Base Surface Properly, The Knife Edge Will Be Too Heavy To Bond Properly.
4. Position And Hold: Press Together The Two Broken Edges, Tape Or Clamp The Two Broken Edges To Securely Hold Together While The Adhesive Cures.
5. Cure And Finish: Allow The Adhesive To Cure In Place Without Any Outside Utterly/Force Acting Upon The Adhesive For A Minimum 36 Hours Before Sanding And Polishing The Edge To Restore An Even And Smooth Finish.
What Type Of Adhesive Should You Use For Your Granite Repairs?
– Use Knife Grade, Two-Part Epoxy Adhesive For Large Structural Repairs (Structural Repair).
– Use Fast-Curing Clear Cyanoacrylate Adhesive To Completely And Quickly Repair Chips And Cracks.
– When Repairing Outdoors And Or/When Humid, Use Polyurethane Or UV-Resistant Epoxy Adhesives.
A Few Security Warnings
Using Common Hardware Store – Type Adhesives Will Not Achieve A Proper Repair Because The Adhesives Lacked The Required Adhesive Strength To Prevent Cracks And Yellowed Browning From Occurring In The Future.
Using Professional Grade Stone Granite Repair Adhesives Will Provide The Optimal Level Of Performance And Reliability For Both Residential And Commercial Use To Ensure Your Stone Remains Structurally Sound And Attractive.
