Overview of Granite Epoxy Bonding & Durability Epoxy Adhesives are among the most commonly used adhesives for bonding, repairing, and sealing granite due to their high strength and long-lasting durability when bonding small seams between granite countertops, repairing cracked granite, installing granite tiles, and making outdoor granite fixtures. Epoxy adhesives have a better tensile bond strength and durability with bonded granite compared to other types of adhesives, such as polyester resins and silicone caulk, than most other common types of adhesives. The tensile bond strength that is produced by bonded epoxy has been established using a measurement system that calculates tensile bond strength in terms of pounds per square inch (PSI); therefore, the strength of a cured epoxy adhesive will usually be between 3,000 and 5,000 PSI. Lower quality epoxies will have lower tensile bond strengths than higher quality epoxies used to produce granite countertops. In addition to having a tensile bond strength between 3,000 and 5,000 PSI when properly utilized with granite, epoxy’s unique properties/advantages give it great adhesive qualities for remaining attached to granite after it has dried; due to its low cure shrinkage, there are no gaps or weak areas forming between epoxy and granite, which means that lower adhesive strength glues would produce failures, epoxy’s flexibility allows some degree of movement/expansion and contraction of the epoxy joints to accommodate extremely small amounts of change in temperature and thus prevents cracking or delaminating joints during hot weather conditions throughout the seasons, and following complete curing of epoxy products, they are very resistant to water (moisture), ordinary household cleaning supplies (chemicals), stains and moderate levels of heat, thereby maintaining their bonding capability regardless of whether applied to granite countertops in homes or in outdoor granite installations. The bonding ability of epoxy to granite will be primarily dependent on proper prep work on both surfaces and the actual adhesive or epoxy product used; for optimal bonding results, the granite must be clean (free from dirt and moisture) and rough since rough surfaces will improve how well the adhesive “mechanically adheres” to the epoxy, thus, an epoxy that is made for general indoor use only will work well when creating light duty bonds between two pieces of granite, however, when creating an outdoor installation, you must insert UV stabilized exterior grade epoxies because they will perform to a greater degree than non-UV resistant types of exterior grade epoxy. To sum it up, if you properly install epoxy, it forms an amazing bond for granite, and provides the best structural integrity possible for any bond/repair projects associated with granite materials.
