Granite epoxy curing time

Granite epoxy cure time is the full hardening period of the epoxy coating or adhesive between granite substrates, which determines the quality of construction, durability of the surface, and schedule for any subsequent processing. Generally speaking, a professional-grade granite epoxy system uses a standardized cure timeline; however, environmental conditions, type of epoxy used, and thickness of epoxy applied determine how long it will take to fully cure harden.

Standard Cure Timeline for Granite Epoxy

The majority of repair and coating epoxies for granite are two-component system gravitated to three unique stages for curing under ideal conditions (20 – 25 degrees Celsius, 40% – 60% relative humidity):

Working Time (5 to 20 minutes) – After completely mixing the resin and hardener together, the epoxy will be fluid and workable throughout this period of time (5 to 20 minutes) to allow time for adjustments, seam filling, and surfacing to be completed prior to the epoxy becoming too thick to bond.

Initial Tack-Free Cure (8 to 12 hours) – Following the working time / adjustment window, the surface of the epoxy will no longer have any stickiness, thus allowing different objects to be placed on the surface; however, due to the internal softness of the epoxy at this stage, no load, pressure, or friction can be applied to the epoxy during the initial tack-free cure time.

Functional Full Cure (24 to 48 hours) – At the completion of this time period, the epoxy’s hardness has stabilized, and thus the seams, surfaces, and repaired areas of granite can support minimal amounts of daily weight and can withstand gentle cleaning of the surface.

Maximum Structural Cure (7 to 21 days) – In applications where there is a high load (bonding of heavy stone), maximum toughness and durability of the epoxy is achieved at 7 to 21 days through additional cross-linking, resulting in maximum tensile strength, stain resistance, and scratch resistance.

Factors That Affect Cure Time

Temperature – Temperature is the primary influencing factor on the cure time of granite epoxy. Remedying that problem, curing below 15 degrees Celsius drastically reduces the rate of curing, decreasing the amount of hardening of the epoxy. Conversely, temperatures greater than 30 degrees Celsius increase the speed of curing, making working times shorter and possible causing bubbling defects to occur. The ideal temperature range for constructing a project with granite is between 18-27 degrees Celsius.

Humidity – Excessive humidity levels above 85% contribute to surface whitening, surface blistering, and/or reduced bonding. On the contrary, dry, ventilated areas will allow for uniform curing of granite epoxy.

Epoxy Type and Thickness of Coating – Fast-setting repair epoxy products will typically develop an initial cure in approximately 30 minutes and a full cure after 24 hours – making them well suited to perform quick repair of seams. Thick applications will prolong the curing time of the epoxy; while applying a very thin and consistent application of the epoxy will shorten the curing time and create a more consistent cure.

Best Practices for Curing Granite Epoxy

Do not move, clamp, loosen, sand, or polish the granite surface until 24 hours after achieving a functional full cure. Refrain from placing heavy objects or cleaning the granite surface with high-temperature product(s) and/or chemically based products until at least 7 days after full cure is achieved. Be sure that the area of construction remains free from dust and vibration during the entire curing period to ensure a seamless high-strength finish for the granite epoxy product.
