Granite tile adhesive vs epoxy

Epoxy adhesive is another adhesive option that can be used for the installation of granite tiles. Unlike the traditional granite tile adhesive (mortar), epoxy provides a much stronger and longer-lasting bond. On top of that, epoxy has minimal reactions with most chemicals and moisture, making it an excellent choice when a high level of durability is needed.

Epoxy can be purchased as either a one-part or two-part product, both of which have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Factors to consider when choosing either method of epoxy adhesive for your granite tile installation include:

1. In general, epoxy provides a good deal better adhesion than many modified cement-based adhesives.
2. Epoxy typically dries much quicker than traditional cement-based adhesives (24 hours compared to up to 72 hours) and the cured epoxy bond is 100% waterproof.
3. The bond formed with epoxy typically has excellent resistance to numerous types of chemicals including acids, solvents, gasoline, and many food products.
4. Epoxy is generally much more expensive than the traditional granite tile adhesives, but you will eventually see savings due to other adhesives usually required when using traditional granite tile adhesive.
5. Using epoxy adhesive will typically require several additional tools and technical knowledge than using traditional granite tile adhesive, which can turn out to be quite difficult. The Existing Types of Substrates Which Are Acceptable For Use With An Epoxy Adhesive Are: Epoxy Adhesives Cannot Be Used On Any Type Of Soft/Flexible Substratum (i.e., Wood) And Should Never Be Installed On A Substrecept Will Experience Dramatic Degrees Of Displacing (i.e., Concrete Slab, If Supporting Another Surface Such As A Basement). Versatility: An Epoxy Adhesive May Also Be Used On More Than One Type Of Materials; However; The Only Way A Traditional Granite Tile Can Be Installed Is On A Swimming Pool, Floor Or Wall. Overall Bonding Strength: An Overall Bond Created By Epoxy Adhesive Is A Great Deal Greater Than Other Types Of Modified Cement-Based Adhesives, Such As Conventional Cement-Based Adhesive. Flexibility In Use: An EPOXY (A Synthetic Two-Component Resin/Hardener) Provides Flexes290 Long Term Benefits That Enable The Installation Of Extremely Diverse And Attractive Patterns Because Of The Nature Of The EPOXY ADHESIVE’S STRUCTURE WHEN LAID WITH A GRANITE. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY; EPOXY ADHESIVE IS THE CLOSEST THINGS TO ECOLOGICAL (GREEN) PRODUCTS; IN COMPARISON TO ANY OTHER ASTEROS EPOXY. MOST EPOXIES SHOULD CONFORM TO NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL GUIDELINES (BUT SOME MAY DIFFER) AND MOST OF THEM HAVE A LOWER FORMALDEHYDE CONTENT WITHIN WHAT IS KNOWN AS A “VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND.” EPOXY ADHESIVES ARE STRUCTURED TO ALLOW MINIMAL TO ZERO WATER TO STORAGE THOUGH THE CURING OF EPOXY ADHESIVE YIELDS A STRUCTURAL; SYSTEM WITH Rigid And Nonporous Joints, Therefore, EPOXY ADHESIVE IS THE MOST EXCNIUTED MATERIAL FOR HEAVY INSTALLATION INSTALLATION WITH GRANITE REMAINS INSTALLATION PROCESS OR SUPPORT.Pros – Extraordinary strength and durability over time, (very high tensile and compressive strengths) preventing tiles from breaking and/or loosening from the substrate beneath them; They are 100 percent waterproof, 100 percent stainproof with no water permeability; and they are resistant to acidic cleaners and grease. Epoxy Adhesives are a very versatile option for epoxy bonding but also have being able to fill gaps, repair small cracks, and install outdoor granite tiles has limitations. Epoxy Adhesives are typically more expensive than conventional granite tile adhesives (usually 2 to 5 times the price), which is a significant consideration when examining epoxy use. The application of epoxy has specific instructions for application; the working time for epoxy before it cures is very limited (30 to 45 minutes) and must be mixed to specific measurements. If a novice improperly applies epoxy, the epoxy will likely form a hazy epoxy coating or epoxy will not be evenly bonded. VOCs will off-gas during the curing stage, so it is always best to have adequate ventilation while epoxy cures.
Comparison:
Water Resistance: Conventional granite tile adhesive will be somewhat resistant to moisture and is really only recommended for dry, interior tile installations. Epoxy is impervious to moisture and can be installed in wet locations such as tub surrounds, swimming pools, and exterior patios or decks.
Bonding Strength: Epoxy provides an exceptional bonding strength and will hold the weight of the entire tile installation, even in areas of extreme foot traffic.Cement-based adhesives have enough bond strength to secure the installation of tiles on an average residential application.
Food-based and non-food based stains: epoxy will have a much higher degree of resistance compared to standard tile adhesive to food-based grease/oil stains, red wine, bleach, and most acidic cleaners, as opposed to standard tile adhesive which can often curl and/or appear dull and will typically deteriorate over time from cleaning solutions and other chemical substances.
Installation cost. Standard granite tile adhesive has a lower cost and is very fast to install as opposed to epoxy adhesive, which has a longer installation process, significantly higher overall material costs, and may require multiple visits from a professional installer, depending on the amount of granite being installed.
Maintenance. Standard cement-based tile adhesive can develop some form of mold and/or mildew and will usually require maintenance at some point. Epoxy cannot be affected by mold and will maintain its original appearance for years with very little or no maintenance.
What type of adhesive should you use?
If you are installing granite tile in a dry residential area (e.g. living room, bedroom, or interior wall), and have limited funds and/or are doing a basic renovation, then you would probably want to use standard granite tile adhesive for your granite tile installation.
If you are installing granite tile in a wet area (e.g. bathroom or kitchen) and/or at a high-volume location (e.g. restaurant or hospital), then you will want to use epoxy adhesive to create a permanent bond and to ensure there will be no staining on the tiles.
Recommendations. For standard granite tile installations in a dry residential environment, typically the best value and best choice would be standard granite tile adhesive. For granite tile installations in wet, high-volume, commercial, and industrial environments, typically epoxy would be the best choice for a long-lasting granite tile installation. By choosing the right adhesive for the application will ensure a well-functioning granite tile installation, durable and will provide the least amount of future maintenance.
